Follow an image through the whole short poem

1 · Learn

Original poem: The house keeps its coat on. / Windows buttoned, / collar of ivy raised, / it waits beside the road. / At dusk one light loosens / a small gold button; / someone is home / but not yet at the door.

The clothing image runs through coat, buttons and collar. The later light alters the initially closed appearance. Follow the developing metaphor rather than assigning one meaning to an isolated word.

Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

The lit window as a loosened button suggests a small opening or sign of life, while the final line retains a degree of separation.

3 · Your turn

How does the light change the house's earlier presentation?

Check your answer

It introduces a sign of occupancy and a small opening in the closed clothing image, without fully opening the house to the visitor.

4 · Apply your learning

Read the poem aloud and explain how a pause before the final line can preserve uncertainty.
