Explain why the methods suit the purposes

1 · Learn

Original source A, a council notice: The footbridge will close for four weeks while damaged decking is replaced. The signed diversion adds approximately ten minutes to the usual walk. Emergency access remains available by the road bridge. Original source B, a resident's letter: Ten minutes on paper is not ten minutes with a tired child and shopping. I welcome the repair, but the notice treats a daily routine as a line on a map. Please provide clearer resting points along the diversion.

The notice uses measured duration and practical access details to inform. The letter contrasts 'on paper' with carrying shopping and a tired child to challenge an abstract estimate. Both methods relate to purpose and audience.

Comparison should connect method with viewpoint. Listing 'numbers in A, imagery in B' without explaining their role remains incomplete.

2 · Worked example

The letter's map image criticises a planning perspective that may overlook physical experience, while still accepting the need for repair.

3 · Your turn

How does the contrast between 'on paper' and the tired child support the resident's point?

Check your answer

It contrasts an abstract time estimate with the practical effort of making the journey in real circumstances.

4 · Apply your learning

Write a comparative paragraph linking the sources throughout rather than analysing each in isolation.

Adult guidance and safety

Use supplied evidence and allow defensible alternative readings. Do not manufacture quotations or treat model responses as the only valid phrasing. Whole-text literary study, period breadth, chosen examination texts and board-specific assessment require separate completion.
