Join two whole words
Read with an adult. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.
1 · Learn
Rain is a word. Coat is a word. Put them together and you can make raincoat: a coat that helps keep rain off you. A word made by joining whole words is a compound word.
Bedroom joins bed and room. It names a room used for sleeping. These new words are nouns. Read the complete word and think about what it names; joining any two words does not always make a real word.
2 · Worked example
I join class and room to make classroom. I keep both spellings. 'Our classroom has a reading corner.' Classroom names the place, not an action.
3 · Your turn
Join snow and man. Join note and book. What does each new word name?
Check your answer
Snowman: a person-shaped figure made from snow. Notebook: a book for writing notes. Both parts keep their spelling in these examples.
4 · Apply your learning
Make two paper word cards: sun and hat. Put them together, read sunhat with an adult and draw what it names. Use the whole word in a sentence.
Adult guidance and safety
Read instructions and shared texts aloud when needed. Independent reading must match taught sound-spelling knowledge; do not ask children to guess unknown words from pictures. Accept spoken answers before writing and revisit with more books and examples.
Open your writing and drawing pad
Write, draw or show your working. Use a mouse, pen or finger. This pad is not a submitted answer.
Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.
Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.
Clear the drawing? Your typed notes will stay. You can undo this action.
Your pad is empty.
Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.
Replace the notes on this page with the opened file? Download the current notes first if you want to keep them.
Typed notes are not submitted answers.
