The vowel letters after w and qu

Read with an adult. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

1 · Learn

Read want and squash with an adult. In many accents, their a sounds like the vowel in hot. The letters around a can help us remember these spellings.

Now read word and warm. Word has or after w; warm has ar after w. Their vowel sounds differ. These are spelling groups to notice, not a rule that every word beginning with w sounds the same.

want: wasquash: quaword: worwarm: war
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I write 'A worm is in the warm soil.' Worm needs or; warm needs ar. I read both words and check that my sentence has the meanings I want.

3 · Your turn

Complete with or or ar: 'The w__m crawled over the leaf.' 'My coat keeps me w__m.'

Check your answer

Worm uses or. Warm uses ar.

4 · Apply your learning

Read want, watch, squash, word, worm and warm. Sort them by wa, qua, wor and war, then write two in sentences.

Adult guidance and safety

Read instructions and shared texts aloud when needed. Independent reading must match taught sound-spelling knowledge; do not ask children to guess unknown words from pictures. Accept spoken answers before writing and revisit with more books and examples.
