The endings in animal and pencil

Read with an adult. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

1 · Learn

Read animal and pencil with an adult. Animal ends in al. Pencil ends in il. Their last parts can sound quite similar, so looking at the spelling matters.

Build the whole word in parts: an-i-mal; pen-cil. Say it smoothly afterwards. The ending belongs to the word; do not change it to le just because you know other words with le.

Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I label a drawing of a pencil. I check the ending: i then l. Pencil has six letters.

3 · Your turn

Complete the endings using al or il: anim__, penc__, met__, foss__.

Check your answer

animal; pencil; metal; fossil.

4 · Apply your learning

Read 'The pencil is beside the metal tin.' An adult explains metal if needed. Write the sentence from dictation, then check pencil and metal.

Adult guidance and safety

Read instructions and shared texts aloud when needed. Independent reading must match taught sound-spelling knowledge; do not ask children to guess unknown words from pictures. Accept spoken answers before writing and revisit with more books and examples.

Open your writing and drawing pad

Write, draw or show your working. Use a mouse, pen or finger. This pad is not a submitted answer.

Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.

Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.

Typed notes are not submitted answers.
