Bake becomes baking

Read with an adult. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

1 · Learn

Bake ends with a consonant then e. Before adding ing, remove that last e: baking. For baked, we remove e and add ed; the result has only one e before d.

The same starting check helps with nice: nicer and nicest. Shine becomes shiny when we remove e and add y. Read the complete new word after changing it.

bake → baking / bakednice → nicer / nicestshine → shiny
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I need the word for making a cake now. I start with bake, take away e, and add ing. I write baking, not bakeing.

3 · Your turn

Add ing to smile. Add ed to smile. Add er to large. Add y to shine.

Check your answer

Smiling; smiled; larger; shiny.

4 · Apply your learning

Write 'The shiny coin made me smile.' Change smile to smiled in 'Yesterday I __.' Check which e stayed and which ending was added.

Adult guidance and safety

Read instructions and shared texts aloud when needed. Independent reading must match taught sound-spelling knowledge; do not ask children to guess unknown words from pictures. Accept spoken answers before writing and revisit with more books and examples.
