The ending in bridge and stage
Read with an adult. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.
1 · Learn
Say bridge and stage with an adult. Their last sound is the sound at the start of jam, but neither word ends in j. Bridge ends in dge; stage ends in ge.
In bridge, dge comes just after the short vowel sound. In stage, the vowel sounds like the letter name a, and the ending is ge. Learn the whole word as well as noticing the ending. The g in giant can also make the jam sound; the g in gift does not.
2 · Worked example
I read badge. I hear its short vowel and look at the ending: dge. I cover the word, write badge, then check all five letters.
3 · Your turn
Sort these words by their ending, ge or dge: cage, hedge, huge, fudge.
Check your answer
ge: cage, huge. dge: hedge, fudge.
4 · Apply your learning
Make two spelling cards headed ge and dge. Read each of the four words, place it under its heading, then write one sentence using a word from each group.
Adult guidance and safety
Read instructions and shared texts aloud when needed. Independent reading must match taught sound-spelling knowledge; do not ask children to guess unknown words from pictures. Accept spoken answers before writing and revisit with more books and examples.
Open your writing and drawing pad

Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.
Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.
Clear the drawing? Your typed notes will stay. You can undo this action.
Your pad is empty.
Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.
Replace the notes on this page with the opened file? Download the current notes first if you want to keep them.
Typed notes are not submitted answers.
