The letters in other and donkey

Read with an adult. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

1 · Learn

Listen to other and mother with an adult. Their o can sound like the vowel in up. Hearing that sound does not mean we write u: these words use o.

Donkey ends with ey, sounding like the end of happy in many accents. To write more than one donkey, add s and keep ey: donkeys. We do not change it to donkies.

othermotherdonkey → donkeysmonkey → monkeys
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I write 'The other donkey is small.' I check o in other and ey at the end of donkey.

3 · Your turn

Choose the spelling: uther / other. Write the plural of monkey and donkey.

Check your answer

Other; monkeys; donkeys.

4 · Apply your learning

Write two imaginary zoo labels: 'Two monkeys' and 'Three donkeys'. Check ey before s in both labels.

Adult guidance and safety

Read instructions and shared texts aloud when needed. Independent reading must match taught sound-spelling knowledge; do not ask children to guess unknown words from pictures. Accept spoken answers before writing and revisit with more books and examples.
