lesson

One fly, two flies

Read with an adult. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

1 · Learn

At the end of fly and cry, y spells the sound in my. Say the words and notice the y.

For one fly becoming more than one, change y to i and add es: flies. The letter before y in fly is a consonant. With toy, the letter before y is a vowel, so just add s: toys. Flies can also be an action word: 'The bird flies.'

fly → fliescry → criestoy → toysday → days
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I write about two babies. Baby ends with a consonant then y. I change y to i and add es: babies.

3 · Your turn

Write the plural of pony and key. Complete the action word: 'The baby cry → __.'

Check your answer

Ponies; keys; cries. Key keeps its y because a vowel comes just before it.

4 · Apply your learning

Draw one pony and two ponies. Label both pictures. Then write one sentence using keys and check that its y stays.

Adult guidance and safety

Read instructions and shared texts aloud when needed. Independent reading must match taught sound-spelling knowledge; do not ask children to guess unknown words from pictures. Accept spoken answers before writing and revisit with more books and examples.
