Add through the next ten

Read with an adult. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

1 · Learn

To add ones, it can help to reach the next ten first. Split the number you are adding into useful parts.

For 28 + 5, use two of the five to reach 30. There are three left to add: 30 + 3 = 33.

28 + 2 = 3030 + 3 = 335 = 2 + 3
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I work out 46 + 7 as 46 + 4 + 3 = 53.

3 · Your turn

Use the next ten to work out 37 + 5.

Check your answer

37 + 3 = 40, then add the remaining 2: 42.

4 · Apply your learning

Show the two jumps on a number line. Check by counting objects.

Adult guidance and safety

Use practical objects before symbols. Read the task aloud when needed and ask the child to explain, not just name an answer. Revisit with different examples; one successful answer is not proof of fluency.
