Three more each time

Read with an adult. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

1 · Learn

Counting in threes adds three at every step. Start at zero: 0, 3, 6, 9, 12.

You can check the pattern with groups of three counters. Every new group makes the total three greater.

0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

Three boxes hold three balls each. I count 3, 6, 9, so there are nine balls.

3 · Your turn

Continue the count: 12, 15, __, __.

Check your answer

18, 21. Each step adds three.

4 · Apply your learning

Make five groups of three large counters and say the running total after each group.

Adult guidance and safety

Use practical objects before symbols. Read the task aloud when needed and ask the child to explain, not just name an answer. Revisit with different examples; one successful answer is not proof of fluency.
