Quarter past and quarter to

Read with an adult. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

1 · Learn

The long minute hand takes one hour to go around the clock. A quarter of that journey is 15 minutes.

Quarter past three is 3:15. Quarter to four is 3:45: there are 15 minutes left until four. The short hour hand moves gradually between hours.

3 15 Quarter past three: 3:15
Read the labels alongside the explanation.

2 · Worked example

At 3:15 the minute hand points to 3. The hour hand has moved a little past 3.

3 · Your turn

Write quarter past five and quarter to six using digits.

Check your answer

5:15 and 5:45.

4 · Apply your learning

Move the hands on a paper clock. Show quarter past and quarter to different hours.

Adult guidance and safety

Use practical objects before symbols. Read the task aloud when needed and ask the child to explain, not just name an answer. Revisit with different examples; one successful answer is not proof of fluency.
