Turn an action into an ation noun

1 · Learn

A verb can name an action, while a related noun can name that action or its result. Inform means give someone information. In 'Please inform the class', inform is the verb. In 'The information is useful', information is a noun.

The ending ation helps build some nouns. Sometimes the root stays: inform becomes information. Sometimes a final e goes: admire becomes admiration. Read the complete pair; do not add ation to every verb. Play, for example, does not become playation.

inform → informationadmire → admirationprepare → preparation
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

Prepare ends in e. To make preparation, remove that final e and add ation: prepar + ation. 'We prepare the room' describes what we do; 'The preparation took time' names the work.

3 · Your turn

Build the noun from inform. Build the noun from admire, removing the final e first. Which word fits: 'She showed great admire/admiration for the careful model'?

Check your answer

information; admiration. Admiration fits because the sentence names a feeling of respect. The verb admire would need a different sentence, such as 'I admire your model.'

4 · Apply your learning

Say a sentence with prepare and another with preparation. Write both, underline the related words and compare their endings. Recheck the spelling tomorrow without first looking at the model.

Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.
