Keep related ideas together

1 · Learn

A paragraph groups sentences about one main part of a text. In a story, a change of place, time or focus can be a useful point to begin another paragraph.

In an information text about a garden, one paragraph might describe the plants and another explain the tools. A paragraph is not defined by having exactly three sentences.

2 · Worked example

I group 'The shed holds spades' with 'The tools hang on hooks'. I put 'Sunflowers grow by the gate' in a paragraph about plants instead.

3 · Your turn

Group these sentences by topic: The roses need watering. The fork is in the shed. The beans are climbing. The rake hangs on a hook.

Check your answer

Plants: roses need watering; beans are climbing. Tools: fork in shed; rake on hook. Each group could form a paragraph.

4 · Apply your learning

Write two short paragraphs about an invented club: what it does and what members need. Check the focus of each paragraph.

Adult guidance and safety

Read aloud together where needed. Discuss more than one reasonable answer to open questions. These short original texts support, but do not replace, whole books, oral discussion, a school-matched phonics programme where needed, or regular handwriting and spelling practice.

Write, draw or show your working. Use a mouse, pen or finger. This pad is not a submitted answer.

Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.

Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.

Typed notes are not submitted answers.
