Listen to the stressed syllable

1 · Learn

Adding a vowel-starting suffix sometimes doubles a final consonant. In forget, the stress is on get: forgetting doubles t. In visit, the stress is at the beginning: visiting does not double t.

Say each word carefully and look at a reliable example. This is one spelling pattern, not a rule to double every last letter. Notice final-e changes too: make becomes making.

forget → forgettingvisit → visitingmake → making
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I spell visiting with one t after the i because the final syllable is not stressed. I check the whole word after adding -ing.

3 · Your turn

Choose the correct spelling: forgetting or forgeting; visiting or visitting.

Check your answer

Forgetting and visiting.

4 · Apply your learning

An adult dictates: 'We are visiting the park.' Write it, then compare letters, capital and full stop with the model.

Adult guidance and safety

Read aloud together where needed. Discuss more than one reasonable answer to open questions. These short original texts support, but do not replace, whole books, oral discussion, a school-matched phonics programme where needed, or regular handwriting and spelling practice.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.

Typed notes are not submitted answers.
