lesson
Share tens and ones
1 · Learn
To divide a two-digit number, split it into parts that share evenly when possible.
For 48 ÷ 4, share 40 into four groups to give ten each, then share 8 to give two each. Each group gets twelve. Check by multiplying 12 × 4.
2 · Worked example
For 72 ÷ 3, I split 72 into 60 and 12. Their shares are 20 and 4, so the answer is 24.
3 · Your turn
Work out 84 ÷ 4 using 80 and 4. Check your answer.
Check your answer
21. 80 ÷ 4 = 20 and 4 ÷ 4 = 1; 21 × 4 = 84.
4 · Apply your learning
Use counters or place-value pieces to show the equal shares before recording them.
Adult guidance and safety
Use objects or a drawn model before relying on a rule. Explain each step, check the units and revisit with varied examples. An adult can read the instructions without supplying the answer.
