lesson
Choose details that identify
1 · Learn
A noun phrase is built around a noun. In 'the small wooden boat beside the jetty', boat is the main noun. The other words help identify or describe it.
Expansion can include adjectives and a prepositional phrase, not just a string of adjectives. Choose details that help your reader find or imagine the intended thing.
2 · Worked example
If there are several boats, beside the jetty may identify the right one more usefully than beautiful. I choose detail for a purpose.
3 · Your turn
Expand 'the box' so a reader can distinguish it from another box in the room.
Check your answer
For example: 'the blue cardboard box under the table'. Many answers work if the detail is clear and useful.
4 · Apply your learning
Describe one invented object in a room without pointing. Ask a partner what they pictured and improve an unclear phrase.
