Choose the spelling by meaning

1 · Learn

In 'The rain will affect the match', affect is a verb meaning influence. In 'The rain had an effect', effect names a result. In these examples the similar sounds have different jobs.

Other pairs include peace and piece, and accept and except. Context tells you the intended meaning. Check the full sentence rather than selecting the most familiar spelling.

Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I write 'a piece of paper' because I mean a part or sheet, not calm. I write 'everyone except Tom' to leave Tom out.

3 · Your turn

Choose peace or piece: 'Please give me a ___ of string.' Choose accept or except: 'I will ___ the invitation.'

Check your answer

Piece; accept.

4 · Apply your learning

Write two sentences using a selected pair correctly. Explain each meaning aloud before checking the spellings.
