Answer the question actually asked
1 · Learn
Read: On Tuesday, the class planted twelve bean seeds in labelled pots. They placed the pots near the classroom window. On Friday, four shoots were visible, and the pupils recorded their height.
A retrieval answer uses information stated in the text. Check whether the question asks about seeds, shoots, a date or a place before choosing a number.
2 · Worked example
How many shoots were visible on Friday? Four. Twelve is a true number from the text, but it counts the seeds planted, not the visible shoots.
3 · Your turn
Where were the pots placed? On which day were the seeds planted?
Check your answer
Near the classroom window; Tuesday.
4 · Apply your learning
Write two questions about different details. Ask a partner to answer and point to the exact supporting words.
Adult guidance and safety
