lesson
Two letters for an s sound
1 · Learn
In science, scene and scent, sc represents the sound at the start of sun. Say the words, then look at both letters. Scene can mean a part of a play or a view; scent is a smell. Meaning helps you choose between scene and seen, or scent and sent.
In crescent, the sc is inside the word. A crescent is a curved shape like a thin moon. This pattern is not used in every sc word: school starts with different sounds. Learn the complete words and listen rather than deleting c whenever you meet sc.
2 · Worked example
'We performed the opening scene' needs scene, a part of a play. 'I have seen the play' needs seen, a form of see. The sound alone cannot tell me which spelling fits the meaning.
3 · Your turn
Choose scene/seen: 'Our scene/seen takes place in a garden.' Choose scent/sent: 'The rose has a sweet scent/sent.' Name the two letters for the s sound in the chosen words.
Check your answer
scene; scent. Both use sc for the s sound. Scene names part of the play and scent names a smell; seen and sent would not fit these meanings.
4 · Apply your learning
Draw a crescent on paper or the pad. Label it, circle sc and write a sentence about the shape. Then write a different sentence using scene and explain its meaning aloud.
