Choose a graph for the data

1 · Learn

A bar chart can compare categories such as favourite fruits. A time graph can show a measured quantity changing over time. Label both axes and use consistent scales.

For a plant-height record at weeks 1, 2 and 3, the heights might be 4 cm, 7 cm and 9 cm. Plot time horizontally and height vertically. Joining measurements can suggest change between times, but does not prove every unmeasured value.

Week 1: 4 cm Week 2: 7 cm Week 3: 9 cm
Read the labels alongside the explanation.

2 · Worked example

The recorded increase from week 1 to week 2 is 3 cm. From week 2 to week 3 it is 2 cm, so the first recorded interval has the larger increase.

3 · Your turn

Using the supplied record, what is the total increase from week 1 to week 3? Was the plant definitely exactly 8 cm halfway through week 2 and 3?

Check your answer

5 cm. No: that value was not measured; a straight connecting line is not proof of the exact intermediate height.

4 · Apply your learning

Draw a labelled time graph of the supplied record. Separately make a bar chart for three invented category counts and explain the difference.

Adult guidance and safety

Use practical or drawn representations and explain the method. Check units and labels. A correct answer to one example is not evidence of secure fluency; revisit with varied numbers and feedback.
