lesson

Divide each part equally again

1 · Learn

Equivalent fractions name equal amounts of the same whole. If every third is split into two equal pieces, thirds become sixths. Two thirds then becomes four sixths.

Multiply numerator and denominator by the same positive whole number to build a family. The number of pieces and their size change together, keeping the amount the same.

2/3 = 4/6 = 6/91/4 = 2/8
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I shade two thirds of a strip, then split each third into three equal parts. Six ninths are shaded.

3 · Your turn

Complete 3/4 = __/8. Is 2/4 equivalent to 1/2?

Check your answer

6/8. Yes: two quarters cover one half of the same whole.

4 · Apply your learning

Draw equal-length fraction strips and check equivalence with matching shaded lengths.

Adult guidance and safety

Use practical or drawn representations and explain the method. Check units and labels. A correct answer to one example is not evidence of secure fluency; revisit with varied numbers and feedback.
