Share the place values

1 · Learn

In 156 ÷ 3, share one hundred among three groups by exchanging it into ten tens. Together with five tens there are fifteen tens, giving five tens per group.

Six ones shared among three give two ones per group. Each group has 52. A short division layout can record the same reasoning without drawing every object.

156 ÷ 3 = 5252 × 3 = 156
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I can also split 156 into 150 and 6. Dividing each by three gives 50 and 2.

3 · Your turn

Find 248 ÷ 4 and check with multiplication.

Check your answer

62; 62 × 4 = 248.

4 · Apply your learning

Use place-value counters to show the exchanges before practising exact short division with different divisors.

Adult guidance and safety

Use practical or drawn representations and explain the method. Check units and labels. A correct answer to one example is not evidence of secure fluency; revisit with varied numbers and feedback.
