Keep pounds and pence aligned

1 · Learn

£3.40 means three pounds and forty pence. When calculating, line up the decimal points or convert every amount to pence.

Add costs before finding change. Estimate too: a total near £7 should not produce £8 change from £10. Money answers need the correct unit and pence digits.

£3.40 + £2.85 = £6.25£10 − £6.25 = £3.75
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I add 340p and 285p to make 625p, then subtract from 1,000p to find 375p change.

3 · Your turn

Two tickets cost £2.75 each. You pay £10. What change do you receive?

Check your answer

The total is £5.50 and change is £4.50.

4 · Apply your learning

Create a pretend receipt with two or three items and check its total using a different method.

Adult guidance and safety

Use practical or drawn representations and explain the method. Check units and labels. A correct answer to one example is not evidence of secure fluency; revisit with varied numbers and feedback.

Open your writing and drawing pad

Write, draw or show your working. Use a mouse, pen or finger. This pad is not a submitted answer.

Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.

Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.

Typed notes are not submitted answers.
