Another way to record numbers

1 · Learn

Roman numerals use symbols including I for 1, V for 5, X for 10, L for 50 and C for 100. Some symbols add, while a smaller symbol before a larger one can subtract in standard combinations.

XL is 40 and XC is 90. LXXIV is 50 + 10 + 10 + 4 = 74. Unlike our decimal place-value system, the usual Roman numeral system has no zero placeholder.

XL = 40L = 50XC = 90C = 100
Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

I split LXVIII into L, X, V and III: 50 + 10 + 5 + 3 = 68.

3 · Your turn

Read XLII and XCIX. Write 26 using Roman numerals.

Check your answer

42; 99; XXVI.

4 · Apply your learning

Compare how 40 and 4 are written in both systems. Discuss the job of zero in 40, without inventing a Roman zero symbol.

Adult guidance and safety

Use practical or drawn representations and explain the method. Check units and labels. A correct answer to one example is not evidence of secure fluency; revisit with varied numbers and feedback.

Write, draw or show your working. Use a mouse, pen or finger. This pad is not a submitted answer.

Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.

Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.
