Time units are not tenths

1 · Learn

One hour is 60 minutes and one minute is 60 seconds. Do not multiply by 100 when converting these units.

Two hours and fifteen minutes is 120 + 15 = 135 minutes. In 24-hour time, 7:20 pm is 19:20. On an analogue clock, the hour hand is partway between 7 and 8 at that time.

One year contains twelve months, including a leap year. Three years contain 3 times 12 = 36 months. For two weeks, use seven days in each week: 2 times 7 = 14 days. Choose the conversion fact that matches the units.

Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

A film from 16:45 to 18:10 lasts 15 + 60 + 10 = 85 minutes, or one hour twenty-five minutes.

3 · Your turn

Convert three minutes to seconds and two weeks to days. How long is 09:35 to 10:20?

Check your answer

180 seconds; 14 days; 45 minutes.

4 · Apply your learning

Show digital times on a paper analogue clock. Use a calendar to connect 12 months to one year and practise related conversions.

Adult guidance and safety

Use practical or drawn representations and explain the method. Check units and labels. A correct answer to one example is not evidence of secure fluency; revisit with varied numbers and feedback.

Open your writing and drawing pad

Write, draw or show your working. Use a mouse, pen or finger. This pad is not a submitted answer.

Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.

Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.
