Check what remains before the ending

1 · Learn

Both -able and -ible occur in adjectives. Understandable clearly contains understand; visible is less easy to build from an everyday whole word. Such clues can help, but they are not a complete rule.

When adding a suffix, spelling changes may matter: rely becomes reliable. Check reliable models for the full word and learn difficult examples such as possible and comfortable in context.

2 · Worked example

I change the y in rely to i in reliable. I then check that the adjective means something can be depended on in my sentence.

3 · Your turn

Choose the correct spelling: reliable or relyable; possible or possable.

Check your answer

Reliable; possible.

4 · Apply your learning

Write a short sentence with each word and explain its meaning. Practise spelling from memory and check, rather than copying only.

Adult guidance and safety

Use these original short models alongside sustained reading of whole books, poetry and plays from varied periods and cultures. Discuss alternative interpretations using evidence. Plan, draft and revise longer work; individual spelling, handwriting and decoding support remain important.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.
