lesson
Literal meaning is not the whole effect
1 · Learn
Read: 'The river was a silver ribbon through the fields.' The river is not literally a ribbon. The metaphor compares its appearance with a long, shining strip.
A simile makes a comparison using wording such as like or as: 'The river shone like a ribbon.' Explain which shared qualities matter and how they affect the scene; naming the technique alone is not analysis.
2 · Worked example
I link silver with reflected light and ribbon with the river's shape. I do not claim the river is made of fabric.
3 · Your turn
In 'The trees stood like silent guards', what comparison is made and what might it suggest?
Check your answer
Trees are compared with guards. It may suggest stillness, watchfulness or a protective line, depending on context. Support the interpretation with the wording.
4 · Apply your learning
Write two original descriptions of the same place, one literal and one figurative. Discuss which suits each intended purpose.
Adult guidance and safety
Use these original short models alongside sustained reading of whole books, poetry and plays from varied periods and cultures. Discuss alternative interpretations using evidence. Plan, draft and revise longer work; individual spelling, handwriting and decoding support remain important.
