Give reasons and answer the point

1 · Learn

A recommendation should explain why a text suits a reader, using specific features rather than only 'it is good'. In discussion, listen before responding and distinguish disagreement with an idea from criticism of a person.

For a short debate, state a position, give a reason and evidence, then consider a reasonable counterpoint. Evidence should support the exact claim, not merely sound impressive.

2 · Worked example

I recommend an information book for a project because its labelled diagrams clarify the process and its index helps find topics. Those are reasons linked to the reader's purpose.

3 · Your turn

Why is 'Everyone agrees with me' a weak substitute for explaining your evidence?

Check your answer

It does not establish the claim or show why it is justified, and may itself be unsupported.

4 · Apply your learning

Discuss a safe classroom question in turns. Summarise a partner's point accurately before giving your response.

Adult guidance and safety

Use these original short models alongside sustained reading of whole books, poetry and plays from varied periods and cultures. Discuss alternative interpretations using evidence. Plan, draft and revise longer work; individual spelling, handwriting and decoding support remain important.

Open your writing and drawing pad

Write, draw or show your working. Use a mouse, pen or finger. This pad is not a submitted answer.

Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.

Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.

Typed notes are not submitted answers.
