Keep the thread across paragraphs

1 · Learn

Paragraph 1: A community garden had no place to store tools. Volunteers drew up a plan for a small shed and asked local residents for comments. Some residents worried it would block a path.

Paragraph 2: The plan was changed so the shed stood away from the path. Volunteers then raised funds and built it with professional help. A summary should include the need, consultation and revised solution without retelling every minor action.

Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

Summary: Volunteers developed and revised a shed plan after residents raised an access concern, then arranged its construction. This captures the connection between the paragraphs.

3 · Your turn

Why did the plan change? Write a summary of both paragraphs in no more than two sentences.

Check your answer

Residents worried about blocking a path. A suitable summary includes the storage need, the concern, the changed position and the completed shed without adding unsupported events.

4 · Apply your learning

Compare summaries and check whether each preserves the cause-and-effect link. Discuss which details can be left out safely.

Adult guidance and safety

Use these original short models alongside sustained reading of whole books, poetry and plays from varied periods and cultures. Discuss alternative interpretations using evidence. Plan, draft and revise longer work; individual spelling, handwriting and decoding support remain important.
