Move a shape without resizing it

1 · Learn

A translation slides each point equally. A reflection gives a mirror image, placing corresponding points the same perpendicular distance from the mirror line on opposite sides.

Both preserve side lengths and angle sizes. A reflection can reverse orientation; a translation does not turn or flip the shape. Use coordinates to check every vertex.

In the diagram the solid triangle has corners (1,1), (3,1), (1,3). Its dashed mirror image across x = 4 has corners (7,1), (5,1), (7,3). Match each pair: their horizontal distances from the mirror line are equal. Both triangles have the same side lengths.

Translate (2,3) right 4 → (6,3) Reflect (2,3) in x = 4 → (6,3)
Read the labels alongside the explanation.

2 · Worked example

The example point reaches the same place under two different transformations, but other points may not. One point alone may not identify how a whole shape moved.

3 · Your turn

Reflect (3,2) across the vertical line x = 5. Then translate the original point two units up. Give both results.

Check your answer

Reflection: (7,2). Translation: (3,4).

4 · Apply your learning

Draw a triangle in the first quadrant and show a reflection in a vertical line and a translation separately. Check corresponding vertices.

Adult guidance and safety

Model the calculation or measurement before relying on a procedure. Explain estimates, units and checks. Use a ruler/protractor and suitable diagrams where needed; text examples alone do not establish practical skill or fluency.

Open your writing and drawing pad

Write, draw or show your working. Use a mouse, pen or finger. This pad is not a submitted answer.

Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.

Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.

Typed notes are not submitted answers.

Check a calculation · Year 5 onward

Use this only when your teacher or adult allows a calculator for the task. Show your thinking first. It does not replace mental or written arithmetic and does not mark your lesson answer.
