Let dialogue change the scene

1 · Learn

A narrative combines setting, character and events. Dialogue works best when it reveals a character or moves the action forward, rather than filling space with greetings. Surrounding actions can show a response without explaining every emotion directly.

Original model: '“Use my card,” Tessa said, pushing her unfinished model aside. Ravi looked at the gap in his bridge. “But then yours will not be ready.”' The exchange introduces a choice and a possible cost.

2 · Worked example

I infer Tessa is offering help at a cost to her own work. To continue, I must decide what Ravi does with the offer rather than repeat the same conversation.

3 · Your turn

Write two sentences continuing the scene so Ravi makes a decision. Keep the characters and problem consistent.

Check your answer

Example: 'Ravi took only a narrow strip. “We can strengthen both bridges if we share it,” he said.' Other coherent decisions are valid.

4 · Apply your learning

Plan, draft and revise a short scene with one turning point. Read dialogue aloud to check punctuation and purpose.

Adult guidance and safety

Read the supplied text together if needed. Accept well-supported alternative interpretations, not invented evidence. Use wider whole books, poems and plays alongside these short original models; provide specific feedback on writing and revisit spelling over time.

Open your writing and drawing pad

Write, draw or show your working. Use a mouse, pen or finger. This pad is not a submitted answer.

Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.

Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.

Typed notes are not submitted answers.
