Choose similar and opposite meanings carefully

1 · Learn

Synonyms have the same or a similar meaning; antonyms have opposite meanings. Large and big are often synonyms. Large and small are antonyms. A word may have several senses, so decide which meaning is being used before choosing a replacement.

In 'a light bag', light means not heavy. Heavy is an antonym in this context. In 'a light room', light can mean bright, so dark is a more useful opposite. Words with similar meanings can differ in strength, tone or usual partners: enormous is stronger than big, and a big mistake is a more usual phrase than a large mistake.

2 · Worked example

I revise 'The path was narrow' to 'The path was wide' to express the opposite width. I do not choose loud merely because it contrasts with quiet: that pair concerns sound, not width. To keep a similar meaning, I could use slender in some contexts, but I would check whether it sounds natural for this path.

3 · Your turn

Give an antonym for hard in 'a hard pillow' and one for hard in 'a hard puzzle'. Suggest a synonym for difficult in the second phrase. Explain why context matters.

Check your answer

A soft pillow; an easy puzzle. Challenging is a possible synonym for difficult. Hard can mean firm or difficult, so its opposite depends on the sense. Check that any suggested alternative preserves the intended meaning.

4 · Apply your learning

Make three sentence pairs. First keep the meaning similar using a synonym; then change a key meaning using an antonym. Explain the effect and reject any dictionary suggestion that does not fit your sentence.
