Keep every place in its column

1 · Learn

A digit's place gives its value. In 9,063,205 the 6 represents sixty thousand, not six thousand. Zeros keep the empty columns visible. Read the number in groups: nine million, sixty-three thousand, two hundred and five.

To compare equally long whole numbers, start at the left and find the first different column. Partitioning should reconstruct the number exactly when the parts are added.

Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

9,063,205 is greater than 9,036,205 because their first differing column is ten-thousands: 6 exceeds 3.

3 · Your turn

Partition 7,408,016. What is the value of its 4?

Check your answer

7,000,000 + 400,000 + 8,000 + 10 + 6. The 4 represents 400,000.

4 · Apply your learning

Place digit cards on a place-value grid; change one digit and explain the resulting difference.

Adult guidance and safety

Ask the learner to explain the method and check it using a different representation. Supply place-value grids, fraction strips, accurate diagrams and measuring tools where needed. These examples need varied practice; a short correct answer alone does not establish fluency.
