A persuasive purpose affects selection

1 · Learn

Text A: 'Join our workshop: build a model bridge and test your design.' Text B: 'The workshop lasted one hour and used paper, tape and weights.' A invites participation; B reports factual details. Different purposes lead to different selections and tone.

A persuasive purpose does not make every statement false, but claims still need evidence. Ask who is addressed, what action is wanted and which information is omitted.

Key words and supplied examples.

2 · Worked example

The command 'Join' directly invites the reader to act. I would check dates, access and cost before assuming the invitation contains all practical information.

3 · Your turn

Which text gives the duration, and which directly asks the reader to participate?

Check your answer

B gives one hour; A asks the reader to join.

4 · Apply your learning

Rewrite one event description as an invitation and a neutral report, preserving the same established facts.

Adult guidance and safety

Discuss interpretations using the words actually supplied. Give feedback on complete drafts and spoken contributions. These original short models must be accompanied by sustained whole-text study and a diverse reading programme; they do not fulfil author-in-depth or Shakespeare requirements by themselves.

Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.

Typed notes are not submitted answers.
