Listen to y in happy

Read with an adult. Take your time. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

Let's look together

Say happy with your adult. Clap two beats: hap-py. The last letter is y. Here it writes a vowel sound.

Now read sunny. It also ends in y. Listen to the last sound. Y can do a different job from its first sound in yes.

hap-pysun-nyfun-nyy at the end
Look, point and talk with your adult.

Watch how I do it

I read happy after my adult. I point to its final y and listen to the ending. I say, 'I feel happy today.'

Adult notes · prerequisites, safety and coverage

The unstressed final vowel varies between /i/ and /ɪ/ across accents. This is not initial /j/ in yes or /aɪ/ in my. Support syllables and other correspondences; family may have different numbers of spoken syllables. Follow the child's taught phonics sequence. An adult reads the instructions, models the sounds and explains unfamiliar vocabulary. Revisit a few words over several days; do not guess words from pictures.

Read instructions aloud. Word-reading practice must match the child's taught sounds. The phonics pages support, but do not replace, the school's systematic synthetic phonics programme. Shared stories are adult-read unless the child can decode them. Re-read and practise daily.
