Listen to bank and sink

Read with an adult. Take your time. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

Let's look together

Read bank with your adult. Listen carefully to the sounds at the end. In this word the letter n comes just before k.

Now say sink. It has n before k too. Keep the ending when you blend; do not leave the k sound out.

banksinkpinkn before k
Look, point and talk with your adult.

Watch how I do it

My adult models bank slowly, then naturally. I point to n and k. I read the whole word and say, 'We sat on the river bank.'

Adult notes · prerequisites, safety and coverage

N represents /ŋ/ before k here. The ending /ŋk/ contains two phonemes: do not label nk as one phoneme. Bank means the side of a river in this lesson; other meanings exist. Follow the child's taught phonics sequence. An adult models unfamiliar sounds, reads instructions and explains meanings. Revisit a few words at a time; do not guess from pictures.

Read instructions aloud. Word-reading practice must match the child's taught sounds. The phonics pages support, but do not replace, the school's systematic synthetic phonics programme. Shared stories are adult-read unless the child can decode them. Re-read and practise daily.
