Read with an adult. Take your time. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.
1 Let's look together
Listen to this complete little story. A soft knock came at the garden gate. 'Tap, tap, tap — who is at the gate?' called Bo. A robin hopped in. Then came a louder knock. 'Tap, tap, tap — who is at the gate?' called Bo. It was Gran with a basket of apples. They shared an apple and watched the robin.
The repeated words help us know what is coming. Listen once. On the second reading, join in with the whole repeated phrase.
Look, point and talk with your adult.
2 Watch how I do it
My adult pauses after the next knock. I say, 'Tap, tap, tap — who is at the gate?' I use the same words as the story.
3 Your turn
Which words repeat after each knock?
Have a go before opening the answer.
Let's check together
Tap, tap, tap — who is at the gate?
4 Try it away from the page
Read or hear the story again and join in. Make a new visitor for a third knock, repeat the phrase, and say one sentence about who arrives.

Adult notes · prerequisites, safety and coverage
The adult reads. Joining in builds attention, phrasing and story language; it is not evidence that the child independently decoded every word. Invite speech, signing, AAC or pointing as appropriate.
Read instructions aloud. Word-reading practice must match the child's taught sounds. The phonics pages support, but do not replace, the school's systematic synthetic phonics programme. Shared stories are adult-read unless the child can decode them. Re-read and practise daily.
Enjoy, discuss and retell stories, poems and non-fiction read aloud.
Listen, take turns, ask questions and explain ideas aloud.
