Listen to the ending in summer

Read with an adult. Take your time. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

Let's look together

Say summer with your adult. Clap its two beats: sum-mer. The first beat is stronger in the model.

Listen to the softer last beat. The letters er write its vowel sound. It does not sound exactly like er in her in the model we are using.

SUM-merWIN-tersis-terun-der
Look, point and talk with your adult.

Watch how I do it

My adult says summer naturally. I repeat it. I point to er at the end, then read the whole word without making both beats equally strong.

Your turn

Which two letters finish winter? Say the whole word after your adult.

Have a go before opening the answer.

er. Listen to the softer ending in winter.

Try it away from the page

Read summer and winter with your adult. Talk about one thing you notice in each season. Listen for the last beat without forcing a new accent.

Adult notes · prerequisites, safety and coverage

This is unstressed er, often schwa; rhotic speakers retain an r sound. Respect home accents. Do not reduce the distinction to an absolute long/short vowel rule. Follow the child's taught phonics sequence. An adult reads the instructions, models the sounds and explains unfamiliar vocabulary. Revisit a few words over several days; do not guess words from pictures.

Read instructions aloud. Word-reading practice must match the child's taught sounds. The phonics pages support, but do not replace, the school's systematic synthetic phonics programme. Shared stories are adult-read unless the child can decode them. Re-read and practise daily.
