Read with an adult. Take your time. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.
1 Let's look together
Say have with your adult. Listen to its last sound. Look at the written ending: v then e. We do not say an extra e sound at the end.
Read give. It ends with ve too. Learn the whole word: an e at the end does not always make the earlier vowel say its letter name.
ha + ve → havegi + ve → giveloveglove
Look, point and talk with your adult.
2 Watch how I do it
I spell give with g-i-v-e. I read it back. I do not say g-i-v as the complete spelling, and I do not make give rhyme with five.
3 Your turn
Complete the spelling: I ha__ a book. Which two letters finish have?
Have a go before opening the answer.
Let's check together
ve: have. Read the sentence with your adult.
4 Try it away from the page
Read have, give and five with your adult. Find ve in all three, then listen to how the vowel sound differs.

Adult notes · prerequisites, safety and coverage
English words rarely end in bare v; final e is usually added. Do not call ve a universal digraph or claim it always changes the preceding vowel. Live is the verb rhyming with give here, not the adjective in live music. Follow the child's taught phonics sequence. An adult models unfamiliar sounds, reads instructions and explains meanings. Revisit a few words at a time; do not guess from pictures.
Read instructions aloud. Word-reading practice must match the child's taught sounds. The phonics pages support, but do not replace, the school's systematic synthetic phonics programme. Shared stories are adult-read unless the child can decode them. Re-read and practise daily.
