Measure · Lesson 23 of 32

Heavier or lighter?

Read with an adult. Take your time. You can say, point, draw or write your answer.

Let's look together

A balance helps compare how heavy things are. The heavier side goes down. If the pans balance, their loads have equal mass.

A big object is not always heavier. An empty box can be lighter than a small stone. We check instead of guessing from size.

Balance tips down → heavierBalance rises → lighterLevel pans → equal mass
Look, point and talk with your adult.

Watch how I do it

A toy balances with five identical blocks. Another balances with three of those blocks. The first toy is heavier.

Your turn

A toy car balances with 4 blocks. A toy boat balances with 7 identical blocks. Which is heavier?

Have a go before opening the answer.

Let's check together

The boat. It needs more of the same blocks to balance it.

Try it away from the page

An adult helps you compare two safe objects on a balance. Draw the result; begin to notice gram readings on a suitable scale.

Open your writing and drawing pad

Write, draw or show your working. Use a mouse, pen or finger. This pad is not a submitted answer.

Not saved to your account. Download your drawing as PNG and your typed notes as TXT before leaving or refreshing. They are separate files. Do not enter private information.

Open a picture saved on this device to draw on it again. Opening replaces the drawing, but Undo can restore it. PNG only, up to 4 MB and 4096 × 4096 pixels. The picture stays in this browser; it is not uploaded. Paper lines in a saved picture become part of that picture.

Drawing is unavailable. Use the typed working area below.

Your pad is empty.

Open a UTF-8 TXT file from this device, up to 40 KB and 10,000 characters. It stays in this browser. Opening can be undone until you type again. Downloads keep a new copy; they do not change the file you opened.

Typed notes are not submitted answers.

Explore and practise freely. Opening this lesson or using the writing pad does not save completion or a score.

Adult notes · prerequisites, safety and coverage

Prerequisite: comparison. Use safe lightweight objects and identical non-standard weights. Do not infer mass just from an illustration.

Use large counters, blocks and paper before symbols. Revisit a lesson until the child can show and explain the idea. Numbers grow from 0–10 to 20, then 100; these pages are not a one-sitting course.

These are teaching introductions, not a claim of mastery. Open the subject's coverage map and limits.
